Lantern Hill Review publishes slow, essayistic writing about reading itself: the second pass, the borrowed language, the pencil in the margin. We would rather understand one habit well than survey a season.

Lantern Hill Review is edited from a flat above a tram line in Frankfurt am Main, a city that hosts the world's largest book fair for five days each October and then returns, gratefully, to its ordinary reading life. That contrast is our subject. We are interested less in what is being published this month than in what happens between a reader and a page on a Tuesday evening, when nobody is watching and no opinion is owed to anyone.

The review appears irregularly and by design. An essay is posted when it is finished rather than when a calendar demands it, which means some seasons are quiet and others arrive in a cluster. We write in English from a German city, which colours the work: half of what we read here we read in a language we learned late, and that slowness has become a method rather than an apology.

We take no advertising, publish no sponsored pieces, and run no recommendation lists dressed as criticism. Nothing on the site is a product. When we discuss particular books, they are old enough to be out of copyright and their authors long dead, which spares everyone the awkward theatre of praising the living. The archive stays online; nothing is quietly deleted.
